Go for Independent Mountain Biking Trails in Lake Tahoe

Let's face it: mountain biking isn't the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Lake Tahoe. Tahoe is more of a tourist destination revolving around luxury resorts, gambling, snow skiing and water sports. But to those of you whose idea of adventure and fun around Lake Tahoe happens atop a fat tire mountain bike with rockin' views ahead of you and dirt flying behind you, then Lake Tahoe is sure to fulfill one of your dream biking scenes.

For the serious mountain biker, the independent trails are the way to go - from beginner and mid-level to hardcore treks. For starters, Fountain Place and Sawmill Flat are two popular trails for beginning bikers and families seeking a leisurely ride. Sawmill Flat features a great view of the Northstar Reservoir and surrounding mountains. Watson Lake is another novice area that is also a nice spot for a picnic, with views of beautiful wildflowers and California junipers.

For more skilled riders and weekend of intermediate status, The Flume awaits with spectacular scenery and a smoothly challenging ride. Riders have described The Flume as the perfect trail for killer scenic views without being too demanding or technical. This trail is extremely popular with tourists, so early morning and weekday rides are recommended to avoid the crowds. Other sought after mid-level trails include Angora Ridge, Twin Peaks (a short strenuous trail), Meiss Trail and Rim Trail.

One of the most thrilling technical rides for the experienced mountain biker is Mr. Toad's, a trail that drops from 9,000 to 6,800 feet in three miles! Don't miss Genoa Peak, a great ride along a ridgeline with scenic views of the Lake Tahoe Basin and Carson Valley. Other top-level trails include Brockway Summit to Martis Peak, McKinney/Rubicon Road trail, and Marlette Lake. As always no matter what level you're in, check your planned route in advance to avoid biking on private land or through restricted areas.

For some of the best beginner rides, challenging intermediate trails and white-knuckle expert courses, you almost can't beat Lake Tahoe.
